Sample Preparation Guidelines

Plant Tissue

Soilless Media

Soilless Media

  • Collect healthy, representative tissue unless you are submitting for a specific issue. Then submit good vs bad tissue.

  • Avoid leaves or tissue with soil, dust, spray residue, or fertilizer granules when possible.

  • Place tissue in a clean paper bag or breathable container. Avoid sealing fresh tissue in plastic for extended periods.

  • If shipping will be delayed, keep samples cool and ship as soon as possible.

Soilless Media

Soilless Media

Soilless Media

  • Collect a representative composite from multiple locations within the container/bench/area.

  • Avoid sampling only the surface. Include material from the root zone.

  • Remove large debris and avoid including roots or plant material unless requested.

  • Place media in a clean sealed bag to prevent leakage and moisture loss.

Soil

Soilless Media

Water & Fertilizer Solution

  • Collect a composite sample by mixing subsamples from several locations within the area.

  • Remove surface debris (mulch, leaves) and avoid sampling immediately after fertilizer application unless that is the purpose of the test.

  • Place soil in a clean sealed bag and clearly label the sample ID to match your submission form.

Water & Fertilizer Solution

  • Use a clean bottle with a tight-fitting cap. Rinse the bottle with the sample water or solution before final filling if possible.

  • Fill to minimize air space and ensure the cap is secure to prevent leaks.

  • Label bottle(s) clearly and package in a secondary bag to protect paperwork.

  • If temperature-sensitive, ship promptly and keep samples cool.

Plant Pathology

Water & Fertilizer Solution

Plant Pathology

  • Submit fresh, representative material showing early to moderate symptoms when possible. Avoid material that is completely decayed.

  • Include multiple pieces if available, and submit the transition area between healthy and affected tissue.

  • If submitting roots, include some surrounding media/soil if relevant, and keep roots from drying out.

  • Place plant material in a sealed plastic bag to retain moisture. Do not allow soil or media to contaminate upper portion of plant.

  • Keep samples cool (do not freeze unless instructed) and ship as soon as possible.

  • Include background information on the Pathology Submittal Form, such as crop/variety, symptoms, timeline, and any recent treatments.

General Tips

Water & Fertilizer Solution

Plant Pathology

  • Use clean containers and tools to avoid cross-contamination between samples.

  • Separate each sample in its own bag or bottle, even if they are related.

  • Protect paperwork by placing forms in a sealed plastic bag inside the box.

  • For liquids, double-bag bottles and use absorbent material in case of leaks.

  • Ship early in the week when possible to reduce weekend delays in transit.

  • Keep samples cool and out of direct heat during storage and shipping.

  • Clearly indicate any priority timing or special handling notes on the submission form.

  • If you are unsure which test to request, contact QAL before shipping for guidance.
